Previously associated with the Congress, 1947-48 and Socialist Party, 1948—77; was under detention on four occasions including 14 months during the last emergency under Maintenance of Internal Security Act and lost property worth 7 acres of agricultural land; has been Municipal Commissioner, Tezpur from 1950; was Hon. Secretary, Ban Theatre; now President of Municipal Workers Union, Cotton Mill Workers Union, Tea Labour Union, Road Transport Workers' Union; Member, Assam Sahitya Sabha; presently Member, (i) Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and (ii) Joint Committee on Salaries, and Allowances of Members of Parliament.
