Among the examples given above for the classifier khan, only dhaari-khan (the mat) seems to satisfy the ideal meaning completely. Here we have an object which is almost ideally flat and broad. Almost ideal uses can also be seen in duaar-khan (the door), kanhi-khan (the dish or the plate), postaar-khan (the poster), sobi-khan (the photograph). A door, a photograph or a poster can be considered more or less as an ideal geometric object which is flat and broad. A plate is also almost an ideal flat object that happens to be round. The fact that a door is normally vertical and not horizontal doesn't seem to play a role here in the selection of the correct classifier. Similarly, whether the mat is vertical, horizontal or rolled up doesn't affect the use of the classifier khan with the word dhaari discussed earlier in the paragraph.
